Maria Sharapova out for a month with injuries
Charleston, South Carolina (dpa) - Maria Sharapova is expected to miss much of the French Open run-up season on clay after withdrawing from next week’s Family Circle Cup, the WTA said on Monday.
The Russian, beaten in the fourth round of her last event in Miami by Serena Williams, may not be back on court until mid-May, with the Grand Slam starting May 28 in Paris.
She is suffering with an existing right shoulder injury and a left hamstring problem and will also miss Russia’s April Fed Cup tie in Moscow against Spain.
“I’m very disappointed to have to withdraw because of injuries that will keep me out of competition for five or six weeks,” Sharapova said in a statement.
“It is really difficult for me to miss top events, but I need to make sure that I get myself healthy enough to play.
“I’m looking forward to getting back on the court as soon as possible.”
The teenager who turns 20 on April 19 lost the Australian Open final to Williams, then quit the Tokyo semi-finals in early February with an injury.
She also lost in the fourth round at Indian Wells last month as defending champion.
The Charleston clay-court field includes Miami winner Serena Williams, sister Venus Williams and Martina Hingis.
